Caring for the Caregivers

According to this week’s article, “Aging America Creates Demand for Health Care Workers,” the health care and social assistance fields are projected to make up about ¼ of the total 20.2 million new jobs likely to be created in the US by the year 2020. This may be to be due to the fact that about 33.8 million baby boomers will have retired by 2020. Although increasing numbers of retired workers means more job openings for the economy, a quarter of the US workforce is still expected to be made up of older, baby boomer-aged workers.

Our country’s rising elderly population is resulting in obstacles to the productivity of workers everywhere. Today, approximately 1 in 5 employees are responsible for the care of an older parent or relative and many employees are spending time at work solving these family issues. This leaves employee caregivers with significant emotional strain as the relationship between parent and adult child often includes a degree of unresolved emotion. Conflicts can emerge when the adult child steps in to assist a parent who needs assistance. Additionally, the total business cost of these employee caregivers, based on productivity and retention losses is more than $33 billion annually.

Fortunately, employers can play an important role in providing support to working caregivers that will translate into a reduction in lost productivity and an increase in morale. Managers should be approachable to their employees on caregiving issues, and if possible, offer flexible work hours for employees to make up lost time. By acknowledging and positively responding to your employees’ caregiving needs, you as a manager will be able to improve your employees’ productivity and overall job satisfaction.
