Mary's Story - Mary is an employee in her early 50's whose husband of 30 years died 4 months ago following a long-term battle with cancer. Mary feels intense sadness, frequent tearfulness, and difficulty in focusing on her work. When Mary met with the EAP Counselor, they discussed how she has typically been the “strong” one able to manage her emotions and concerns on her own. While her friends and co-workers have been generous in their offers of support, she has often declined, and has tried to make an impression that she is managing just fine. She has two married sons, who live out of state, and 3 grandchildren.

Mary is feeling very isolated and alone at a time when the support of others is most needed. She met with the EAP Counselor six times. The EAP Counselor identified a local bereavement support group that Mary found very helpful. She also realized she needed to spend some time with her children and their families and took a couple weeks off work to visit. Two months after her last meeting with the EAP Counselor, her intense sadness was diminished, she was feeling much less isolated and more focused, and she was feeling stronger in her overall ability to cope.

Denise's Story - Denise, a 44 year old employee, and her husband Kevin met with the EAP Counselor twice. They have 1 son who is in his first year of college at an out-of-state school. Kevin has always had at least a few beers daily but has been drinking in increasing amounts. Denise is concerned that he has a drinking problem and wants him to stop. Denise’s father was an alcoholic who died of health problems resulting from his drinking. Kevin denies that his drinking is a serious problem, and claims he can cut down but doesn’t need to stop completely. He agrees that if he is not successful in cutting down he will consider further help.

Denise meets with the EAP Counselor a few times on her own to look at how this is impacting her and how she can manage it. She also starts attending Al-Anon meetings to gain insight and further support on managing one's own life when loved ones have drinking problems.

Karen's Story - Karen sought the assistance of EAP due to marital tension and stress. She saw the EAP Counselor alone for the first session and came in with her husband John twice. She and John have been married for 7 years and have 2 pre-school aged children. John is a full-time manager. Karen works as a full-time sales manager at a nearby department store. Her and John’s work schedules and child care responsibilities have left little time for alone time. She would ideally like to stop working until the kids are in grade school but this is not financially possible.

The EAP Counselor helped them explore their situation and options. They decided that they could manage financially if Karen cut down to part-time work. A co-worker was seeking to do the same and Karen was able to arrange a job share. Karen and John also created a “date night” babysitting pool with another couple who were friends and have similar aged children. In this way, Karen and John could have a night out to themselves every other week while their friends watched all the children, and visa versa. They also started a “sleep over at grandma and grandpa’s house” tradition once a month.
