Mental Health in the Workplace: Spreading the Word to End Stigmas

As a business owner or manager, each day you interact with your co-workers to achieve goals and help your business prosper. As you work with different individuals, you begin to learn each person’s unique personality and work style. One thing you may not realize, however, is that many people go to work each day struggling with a mental illness. Even though it is incredibly common, it is rarely talked about within social circles and the workplace.

Mental illness is a brain-based medical condition that affects 1 in 5 Americans. Mental health issues impact a person’s thinking, mood and behavior. When not properly addressed and managed, mental health issues can overtake a person’s life and affect those around them, including co-workers, as well as cause their job performance to suffer. Addressing mental health issues in the workplace and investing in mental health care options for employees will not only improve overall well-being but increase employee productivity and retention.
